Secundino Hernández’s frenetic oil, gouache, and acrylic paintings feature abstract and figurative elements, and references to both Action Painting and the Old Masters, particularly Spanish forbears like El Greco and Velázquez. Hernández works methodically, using brushes or applying paint directly from the tube, rendering animated lines and marks before washing and scraping the surfaces of his works—in effect creating compositions that appear at once ordered and explosive. “I move slowly across the canvas,” he says. “They may look like action painting or expressionism, but it’s a deep and meticulous examination of those languages, a way of creating my own contemporary take on certain aesthetic movements.”
