Ann Craven’s lush, sensuous paintings feature motifs of birds, flowers, and the moon; the artist fills other abstract canvases with brushy color fields. Craven paints from photographs and sketches as she repeatedly visits the same subject matter. She also embraces plein air painting. Her canvases become diaries of shifting perceptions and remembrances. Craven’s specific iconography owes a debt to Pop art, though she’s also inspired by her own experiences and the vistas from her part-time home in Maine. Craven has exhibited in New York, London, Paris, Los Angeles, Berlin, and Florence, among other cities. Her work belongs in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the New Museum, the Hammer Museum, and the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, among others.
